MV Faah Yai Liveaboard: Details

The MV Faah Yai (Thai meaning "big sky") is a liveaboard which takes 10 guests in five air-conditioned cabins, each with it's own attached bathroom and shower (en suite). She is a very comfortable boat and has the added advantage of taking only a few divers on board, making your time on board and in the water a quality experience. Faah Yai is under new (Swedish) management as of October 2008. She offers three days/ three nights diving trips to the Surin Islands and Richelieu Rock all season. She also offers Mergui Archipelago itineraries, and longer charters upon request.

She is an 85 foot (25m) long vessel of wooden construction. She has a large interior saloon on the third-level deck, a partially-covered sun deck on the top deck, and a benched area on the stern, just aft of the interior saloon. The crew is accommodated in separate quarters away from the passengers with separate bathrooms and shower facilities, assuring your privacy at all times.

She has three cabins on the main middle deck and two cabins on the lower deck. Cabins three, four, and five have one large double bed, and one twin bed, accommodating both couples and single passengers on a share basis. Cabin one, the Master Stateroom is larger and has one double bed. Cabin two has two single bunk beds. For private charters, it is possible to have three guests in most of the cabins if you so choose.

The Master Stateroom, cabin one on the main deck, is larger than the other cabins and has a view forward with big picture windows. All cabins have their own large private ceramic tiled bathrooms with hot and cold water showers, en suite facilities and double beds for those who prefer them. Twin beds or double beds are possible combinations on this boat.

She is equipped with all the latest navigational aids and communications equipment, including an Iridium satellite phone. Her large dive deck makes it easy for divers to get in and out of the water, and her rigid inflatable makes diver pick ups easy. Her twin engines also make the boat not only safe, but extremely maneuverable, also aiding diver pick up

Her home port is Ranong, north of Phuket, which lies just across from Burma's Victoria Point (Kawthaung) and just north of Koh Phayam where the owner lives and has a small resort. This enables you to spend more time in Mergui diving on the best sites and avoiding the long 300 km trip up from Phuket. She lies very close to Richelieu Rock and Surin Island which allows her to do shorter three-day trips. You can either fly into Ranong directly, or fly into Phuket and drive north to meet the boat.

All in all, Faah Yai is one of the most comfortable boats operating, with her biggest advantage being only having 10 guests on board and also offering double bed accommodation which many boats simply don't provide. She has a nice comfortable classic style about her, an excellent very experienced crew, and is very seaworthy. She is perfect for join-in cruises or full-boat charters.
